Great Britain: government clarifies new arrangements for short-time work

The guide to applying the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme (short-time working scheme) has been revised to take new measures into account and in particular to allow for the possibility from 01 July of combining ‘furlough’ arrangements with work. This umpteenth update also specifies that the scheme officially closes to new entrants on 30 June, but will, as an exception, remain open to employees who were on parental leave during the peak of the pandemic.

Those eligible will have to wait until 01 July to make the first applications for short-time working for the month of July, the government’s 12 June update specified. The minimum period of short-time working has also been reduced. Until now, employers could only apply for short-time work for periods of at least 3 weeks. This threshold has now been lowered to 7 calendar days. As previously announced during the 29 May Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme update (c.f. article No.11973), only employees
