British workers at McDonald’s fast-food chain operating under zero-hours contracts that guarantee neither workers’ working hours nor their pay, will now be able to choose to move over to fixed-hours employment contracts. This significant employment policy move is an effort by management to take their workers’ day-to-day circumstances into account, especially as regards securing housing loans.
Normally highlighted as a business with questionable social practices, the fast-food chain has taken a step forward in announcing that it would give its 87,000 employees across Britain, who for the most part operate on zero hours contracts, the option to move over to fixed hour contracts guaranteeing a minimum of 4, 16, or 30 hours a week. “This all stemmed from an internal inquiry”, explained Paul Pomroy, the boss of McDonald’s UK to the press, “In September, the feedback was that there is an
