Workers at Heinz’s Wigan food factory have balloted overwhelmingly for strike action and industrial action short of a strike over what they consider to be a poor pay offer while company profits continue to increase. The workforce, organised by Unite, was offered 3.3% for 2010, plus £200, followed by a 3% capped deal the following year when inflation is forecast to be higher than 3%. Currently, the Retail Price Index – one of the main measures of inflation – is 4.5%.
