Great Britain: new labor law amendments coming into force

Abusive layoff.  Workers starting a new job on April 6 and later will be subject to the government reform extending seniority in the company from one to two years to be able to sue the employer for abusive layoff.  The eligibility period opening the right to receive a written document explaining the grounds for layoff also goes from one to two years.  In the government’s eyes, this first measure could help businesses recruit and therefore grow.  However, the Trades Union Congress, which has always been completely opposed to it, says that it increases insecurity at work and will lead to discrimination against young workers, part-time women, and employees from ethnic minorities.  The TUC says that 2.7 million UK workers are going to be at more risk of loosing their jobs for they have temporary or part-time jobs.
