Great Britain: new reform of employment disputes in perspective

The reform adopted two years ago is a failure. Employment tribunals are more blocked up than before, and the system is becoming more and more costly. Trade unions and employers, both unhappy, are asking for new changes. (Ref. 061244)

The Minister of Employment and Industry has announced a thorough revision of employment dispute resolutions, two years after the last reform which did not bring the improvements expected. The introduction in 2004 of procedures of amicable settlement within firms, for grievances and disciplinary questions, has only complicated the system, without easing congestion -on the contrary- in employment tribunals. Statistics for the year 2005-2006 show an increase of 31 % of complaints compared to 2004-
