Great Britain: recent statistics on strikes show considerable increase

Overall strike activity has sunk to an all time low of just 92 strikes in 2010 with a mere 132,000 workers involved and 365,000 days not worked. In 2009, there were 98 strikes involving 209,000 workers and 455,000 days not worked. By contrast, 2011 was a doubling of the number of strikes to 184 and the number of workers involved and days not worked rise to 1,536,000 and 1,387,000 respectively. This represents the highest number of workers involved in strikes since 1982 and the largest number of days not worked since 1990. Both were years when Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher, was in office. The number of days not worked per thousand workers was 56, again the highest since 1990.
