According to a study paid for by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), there is a 7.5% increase in work strain for employees whose work is checked by information and communications technology (ICT) systems, compared with those in similar jobs but controlled by more traditional methods. The trade union magazine on health and safety at work, Hazards, had already pointed this phenomenon out. (Ref. 080043)
Thousands of employees are reporting exhaustion, work-related anxiety and a deteriorating family life. Such is the main conclusion of a study financed by the Economic and Social Research Council, published in a book entitled Market, Class, and Employment. More than half of British employees (52%) report that a computerised system keeps a log or record of their work and nearly one quarter (23%) say that this information is used to check their performance.
