Great Britain: TUC demands additional measures for the respect of minimum wage

The UK's Trades Union Congress (TUC) has called on the Low Pay Commission (LPC) - which is going to issue recommendations to the government in early 2009 - to propose new measures to improve the effectiveness of provisions on the national minimum wage (NMW). The novelties recently introduced in the Employment Act 2008, which impose heavy penalties for failure to respect NMW, are not enough. (Ref. 080972)

Too many exceptions. The TUC has witnessed success in
pushing through some of its key NMW demands in recent years. Lately, it managed
to include amendments to Employment Act (adopted in November), to increase
penalties for employers failing to abide by NMW rules. The law even includes
unlimited fines in severe cases. However, the union is now asking the LPC to
consider a number of additional related proposals, many of which were included
in the recent Vulnerable Worker Enforcement Forum report
