Great Britain: UCATT construction workers’ union to elect general secretary with an internal war in the background

Four candidates became eligible to stand in the forthcoming election having obtained sufficient branch nominations to be placed on the ballot paper. These were the previous incumbent Alan Ritchie, former London region organiser Mick Dooley, Midlands Regional Secretary Steve Murphy, and London Regional Secretary Jerry Swain. However, Ritchie and Dooley were not placed on the ballot after three members of the UCATT general council and three members of its executive council formed a selection panel to examine the candidates. Dooley has responded by seeking a High Court injunction to prevent the union from proceeding with the election without his name on the ballot paper.
