Major changes to union practices and operation mode are about to be adopted – by the end of the year. Indeed, pressed by the Troika, the Ministry of Labor is working on the development of a new legal framework to “modernize” the current system for unions, in force since 1982 (Act 1264). To bargain with the two largest unions in the country – ADEDY (public) and GSEE (private) – the Ministry is proposing a series of radical changes, including unions’ funding, solving the issue of fragmented unions, or even the decision-making procedure for organizing a strike.
Schedule of changes. Regarding funding, the question of maintaining or removing the State’s part was raised, as well as its amount. Financed by mandatory contributions deducted from wages for all employees, this subsidy could be replaced by optional contributions for union members.
