At the end of June a draft Maternity Benefit (Amendment) Bill was drawn up providing 26 weeks of maternity leave to all female workers in both the public and private sectors. The bill is expected to be passed during the parliament’s monsoon session (expected July 18 – August 12).
Currently India’s females work in a dual system as regards maternity leave. For a long time public sector employees have received six months paid leave plus other benefits, whereas only 12 weeks of paid leave are mandated for private sector employees. Some companies including Flipkart, Hindustan Unilever, Accenture, and the Tata Group provide comprehensive maternity policies alongside six months paid leave, but these companies are the exception and many smaller firms have no maternity policies
