According to a recent World Bank survey, job offers in India are most often explicitly biased towards males together with on average better pay for men. A World Bank analysis examined 800,000 job offers from between 2011 and 2017 across both the informal and formal sectors from data available on the QuikrJobs online job portal (which at the time was called BabaJob).
The study showed a distinct and frequent gender preference across the ‘small ads’ (small businesses). One third of the online job platform’s employment offers specifically mention gender as a criterion and of these 60% target males. In India it is perfectly legal to hire somebody based on the gender criterion and as such employers do tend to express their preference.
