Ireland: new Act transposes European directive on temporary work

Equality from the 1st day.  Transposing the EU temporary work directive now allows temporary workers in Ireland to enjoy equal treatment in their employment and working conditions with the permanent workers of the company where they are assigned.  In the absence of an agreement between the social partners, Ireland didn’t use the derogation provided for in Article 5 of the directive which allows waiting for a minimum working period in the company before applying equality.  Therefore, it applies from the very first day at work, with “basic working and employment conditions.”  The Act adopted on May 16 by the Irish Parliament adds that this includes pay, working time, rest periods, night work, overtime, annual leave and public holidays.
