Irish and Hungarian trade unions sign co-operation agreement

SIPTU, the biggest Irish trade union (200 000 members) and the Democratic Confederation of Free Trade Unions of Hungary, signed at the beginning of the month a co-operation agreement having for main objective protection of the interests of the Hungarian workers coming to work in Ireland. This agreement is a part of an ongoing campaign led by SIPTU, in reaction to several cases of immigrated workers rights violation and its aim is « to develop fraternal relations with Eastern Europe trade unions and to stop exploitation of workers ». The general secretary of SIPTU, Mike Jennings, commenting this event, stressed that the overwhelming majority of incidents involving immigrants occur in jobs where there are no trade unions.
