On January 8, 2009, unions were disappointed when they came out of the meeting with representatives from Electronics Data Systems (EDS) and Hewlett Packard (HP) Italia about the restructuring plan caused by HP taking over EDS in May 2008 (see our dispatch No. 080895). The two managements want to start the voluntary leaves plan immediately and refuse to bargain for an agreement to supervise the planned restructuring, as requested by unions. This rapprochement operation leads to 702 job cuts in Italy (24.600 worldwide, more than 9.000 in Europe). (Ref. 090036)
On January 8, the metallurgy unions (Fiom-CGIL, Fim-Cisl and Uilm) and retail unions (Fisascat-Cisl, Filcams- CGIL et Uiltucs-Uil) as well as EDS and HP Italia’s unitary trade union representation bodies (RSUs) met with the social relations representatives of the two businesses at the Ministry of Economic Development.
