Italy: Fim-Cisl and Uilm-Uil sign joint platform for the renewal of the metal collective agreement

“This platform wants to question the government’s austerity policy, claiming that wages can increase without productivity suffering as a result” explained Uilm leader Rocco Palombella.  Meanwhile, Fim leader Beppe Farina said it was “well-considered and ambitious, aiming for tomorrow’s metal industry.”  Thus, on June 13, the national assembly with over 500 representatives from the two unions ratified the platform for the renewal of the metal CCN of October 15, 2009, which will expire on December 31.  Born from the separate agreement between the Fim and Uilm unions and the Federmeccanica and Assistal employers’ organizations (see our dispatch No.  090945), this agreement was rejected by the Fiom, the sector’s majority union, which still considers that the 2008 CCN is the only one in force – and 9 court rulings said it was still valid (see our dispatch No.  110286).  It wants to renew that one based on a platform approved in September (see our dispatch No.  110570).  For their part, Fim and Uilm repeat that the renewal will take place within the framework determined in 2009, because “leaving these rules would entail a risk of not renewing the agreement, choosing conflict, which is expensive for workers and, now more than ever, counterproductive.”  The platform will be sent to Fim and Uilm members to vote by July 6, the two unions aiming for negotiations to open with employers around July 15, reaching an agreement before December.  Here are the main claims.
