Following more than five years of discord (c.f. article No. 9699), Federdistribuzione, an independent umbrella employers’ body encompassing the major supermarket chains (Auchan, Carrefour, Esselunga, Unes,…) as well as specialist retailers (Decathlon, Ikea, Leroy-Merlin, Rinascente, Zara,…), together with the trade unions, Fisascat-Cisl, Filcams-Cgil and Uiltucs, signed the first national collective agreement (NCA) specifically for large retailers. The agreement was signed just before Christmas 2018 and now needs approval by the 300,000 workers in the sector. The agreement runs for 2019 and represents a major step towards setting both a set of benchmarks and equivalent conditions that can apply to all workers in the sector.

The social parties based their agreement on the Confcommercio collective agreement (Federdistribuzione left the Confercommercio in 2012), adapting it to fit the specificities of the large-scale distribution sector (distribuzione moderna organizzata, DMO) that has been struggling both with the growth of the e-commerce business as well as an ongoing moribund domestic consumption
