Italy: Giorgio Squinzi, new President of the Confindustria employers’ organization

“My goal is to be everyone’s President” Giorgio Squinzi said at a press conference yesterday morning, March 22, after he was elected as the new President of the Confindustria employers’ organization.  He will present his team and his program on April 19.  The formal election will take place during a meeting planned on May 23.  Saying that this Presidency was a “mission,” Giorgio Squinzi, who loves biking and soccer, used sports vocabulary to talk about the race for Presidency he won by a very small majority (11 votes) over his rival, Alberto Bombassei, when the gap between them seemed much wider at the beginning of the campaign (see our dispatch No.  120112).  He added that his “primary goal now was to reduce differences – more seeming than real, as they are minimal in programs,” aiming for a “moderate” Confindustria “focused on contents.”  Rejecting the term ‘dove’ some Italian media gave him, he said that labor relations should be built on “constructive dialogue.”  A dedicated European (“We need to have a clear view of the United States of Europe” he said), he said that Europe would be “one of the cardinal points” of the employers’ organization for the coming years.
