Poste Italiane didn’t have a choice anymore: faced with two challenges – the liberalization of the European postal market on January 1st and the decline in mail because of the e-boom, further increased by the crisis – it had to reorganize its mail activities, for a long time the poor relation of a group that invested a lot into banking and new services, such as mobile phone services (see our dispatch No. 100419). Last spring, the group threatened to lay off 10,700 people in delivery and sorting branches. The agreement led to a less radical solution and avoided compulsory leaves. 5,800 jobs will be cut (about 3,300 mailmen out of 40,000 and 1,850 employees from sorting centers) but this, to unions’ great satisfaction, will be pain free.
