As previously announced by Economic Development Minister Luigi di Maio, Italy is set to row back on what are the currently full Sunday opening hours. On 06 September the Chamber’s ‘Productive Activities’ Committee commenced studying legislative proposals including those from the two ruling parties. The Crippa proposal (put forward by current Secretary of State for Economic Development, Five Star Movement) with backing from Luigi di Maio supports the Regions formulating their own Sunday and public holiday opening hours that would result in 25% of commercial businesses from each business category opening on Sundays and public holidays on a rotation basis up to a maximum of 12 per annum per point of sale. Additionally restrictions would be put on e-commerce activities (orders would be blocked on Sundays and public holidays until Mondays or the next available working day).
The Salamartini (put forward by The League) proposal intends for a Regional plan that ‘requires Sunday closing’ apart from 8 Sunday openings per annum, including December Sundays. In general terms, the trade unions are satisfied, e.g. Filcams-Cgil has been a long opponent of Sunday opening, but still have something to say.
