Italy : the unions again mobilised against the sale of two Italian Nokia-Siemens locations

At a meeting with the unions on October 17 at the Ministry of Economic Development, Lauri Kivinen, responsible for external relations at Nokia Siemens Network, confirmed the decision to sell its plants at Marcianise ( 336 employees) and at Cassina de Pecchi (276 employees) to  Jabil Circuits consecutive to the  choice of the group to focus on its software and services activities  instead of hardware production. The unions Fim, Fiom and Uilm as well as the government reasserted their opposition to this plan. Representatives of the Ministry of Economic Development proposed that Nokia-Siemens carry on participation in these locations by forming a joint venture with Jabil Circuits rather than a total withdrawal. The unions backed this proposal inasmuch as it would allow continuation of Nokia-siemens responsibility along the entire production chain with guarantees in terms of production development. In support of this proposal, the unions decided to continue picketing at the entrance of the plants, pursuit of their lobbying of local authorities and their demand for direct intervention by the head of the council.
