Outline of overtime pay. In 1987, the first working time reduction policy was introduced, with the workweek going from 48 down to 46 hours on April 1, 2988 and then down to 40 hours on April 1, 1993. In Japan, even if the official workweek is 40 hours, unpaid overtime remains an old tradition. In spite of some changes to labor law and the effort made by some businesses to avoid abuses, Japanese people still pile up a lot of extra hours, usually unpaid, sometimes even leading to death from overwork (karôshi).
