Latvia: Employers are reluctant to inform about work accidents

Few employers are aware of work accidents in their companies. Only half of companies have a conducted a risk analysis. (Ref. 061145)

A poll conducted by the Ministry of Social Affairs shows that only 25% of employers are aware of work accidents that occurred in their companies. 43% of employers did not estimate the losses caused by the accidents, therefore it is assumed that no investigation of the accidents was done, and no information was sent outside the company. In 2004, work accidents caused a damage of 29 million LVL ( 41.4 million EUR), which represented 0,18% of the Gross Domestic Product, according to State Labor
