Latvia: Parliament rejects an amendment prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation

This negative vote of Latvian members of Parliament triggered many criticisms, especially from the European Commission. The President of the Latvian Republic decided not to promulgate the text and to return it to the Parliament. (Ref. 06770)

The Latvian Parliament voted against an amendment introducing the general principle of non-discrimination based on the sexual orientation into the national labor law. The vote intervened less 24 hours after the European Parliament adopted a resolution on racist and homophobic violence in Europe. This attitude of the Latvian deputies was sharply criticized by the European Commission, the EU Parliament and NGO’s.
