Netherlands: opening of borders to Eastern European nationals is postponed

The Dutch Parliament postponed for two months, on December 12, 2006, the opening of borders to nationals of the 10 new Member States of the EU, integrated in May 2004. Asked by trade unions, this additional time means the current restrictions on freedom of movement will not be lifted before March 1st 2007, instead of January 1st 2007. (Réf. 061262)

The Parliament reserved the possibility of deciding an additional postponing, to allow the government to take measures against the “unfair competition of some Eastern Europeans on the labor market”. Before the Parliament, Henk van Hoof, the Secretary of State for social Affairs and Work, indicated that most of these measures were already taken. He insisted on the fact that labor shortages threaten to block the country’s economic growth. In addition, he reminded, it will be up to social partners
