Netherlands: tighter factory inspections

According to recent figures published by the Factory inspectorate on July 7, the employment of clandestine workers did not fall in 2005 in the construction and agricultural sectors . A quarter of the 5800 illegal workers discovered in 2005 by the factory inspectors comes from the new EU Member States, especially Poland and the Czech Republic. This summer, the Factory inspectorate will not slacken its monitoring. (Ref. 06715)

This clandestine work is denounced by Dutch trade union representatives who work on the same building sites – a common practice in the Netherlands. In the agricultural field, nearly 1 900 inspections were carried out in 2005, including 780 by special teams composed of factory inspectors, policemen, civil servants from the fiscal and unemployment insurance agencies.
