This is the somewhat provocative undertone to two studies carried out by Fafo (Norwegian research institution specialized in labor and trade unions etc. research) in 2014, and authored by Kristine Nergaard. The first study outlines how trade unions in the Nordic region have continued to lose membership over the years even if they maintain some of the highest membership levels in Europe. The second study focuses specifically on Norway and its conclusions concur with the worry that is prevalent among the large confederation organizations.
A significant drop in membership. Even if the Nordic region is known for its high levels of unionization, Norway itself has traditionally had lower levels than Finland, Sweden and Denmark, countries where the unions directly manage unemployment insurance and naturally attract membership. Notwithstanding, all four countries are facing the same reality of lower membership.
