The agreement signed on Saturday January 18 ended significant social protest by miners in Silesia that has been ongoing since January 7 when a recovery plan for the largest mining company in Europe (Kampania Węglowa, Coal Company) was announced. The recovery plan for the Coal Company, which is on the brink of bankruptcy, includes significant restructuring for 4 out of 14 mines. Miners have secured financial guarantees from the Government over leaving their employment as part of the restructuring process.
Key to the recovery plan was the transfer of four out of 14 mines (“Brzeszcze” in Brzeszcze, “Bobrek-Centrum” in Bytom, “Sośnica-Makoszowy” in Gliwice , and “Zabrze” plus “Pokój” in Ruda Śląska) to the Mines Restructuring Company – a mining company whose main activity is closing mines and securing them, and creating new jobs particularly for employees of the liquidated mines.
