Portugal: government and social partners agree on a reform of retirement pensions

The Portuguese government and the social partners reached an agreement, on October 10th 2006, regarding a deep reform of retirement pensions in order to cope with the ageing of the population and the declining birthrate. (Ref 061009)

The agreement was signed by the main social partners, except the general Confederation of Portuguese workers (CGTP). The draft reform must consequently be adopted by the Parliament for an entry into force as soon as 2007. For the Prime minister, this draft reform « aims at saving the national pensions system, not only in the short term, but also in the long-term and medium-term ». The main measure is the establishment of a link between the number of years of contributions and life expectancy. S
