On 25 May, Russian president Vladimir Putin announced a 10% minimum wage increase that will take effect from 1 June. The hike, announced during a meeting of the State Council Presidium, will see the monthly minimum wage increase from 13,890 roubles (€199) to 15,279 roubles (€219). According to Anton Kotyakov, Russia’s labour minister, the minimum wage hike should impact some 4 million Russians. “We must systematically pursue a policy of higher wage growth in relation to the rising cost of living. Our main task is to ensure a further increase in the minimum wage so that the income level of citizens is well above the subsistence level,” Putin said. The crisis sparked by the war in Ukraine has led to price rises of almost 18% in Russia, a surge that has not been witnessed in the country for at least twenty years.
