In just a few years Slovakia has become a real force in the auto industry. In 2015 the country produced more than one million cars. The sector accounts for 80,000 direct jobs and a further 200,000 indirect jobs and now 35% of the country’s total exports. The national economic policy preference towards the auto sector is not without its critics. Nonetheless rather than diversifying the economic landscape the sector is set to get stronger with Jaguar Land Rover looking to start operations in 2020
…Slovakia: automobile unions drive for higher salaries
Unions operating within the sector’s symbolic automakers, Kia Motors Slovakia, Volkswagen Slovakia, and PSA, have started 2017 with strong wage rise demands. This year they are calling for double-digit pay rises and indicate they are ready to mobilize if necessary.
