Unions operating within the sector’s symbolic automakers, Kia Motors Slovakia, Volkswagen Slovakia, and PSA, have started 2017 with strong wage rise demands. This year they are calling for double-digit pay rises and indicate they are ready to mobilize if necessary.
In just a few years Slovakia has become a real force in the auto industry. In 2015 the country produced more than one million cars. The sector accounts for 80,000 direct jobs and a further 200,000 indirect jobs and now 35% of the country’s total exports. The national economic policy preference towards the auto sector is not without its critics.
