Socialist European deputies propose a framework directive for services of general economic interest

The Party of European Socialists (PES) in the European Parliament presented, on June 28, its proposal for a framework directive on services of general economic interest (SGEI). This initiative aims at putting pressure on the European Commission so that it works out a legislative proposal. (Ref. 06704)

The European Commission has always been reluctant to the idea of producing a framework directive on this issue. It has highlighted, on the one hand, the absence of legal basic for such a text and, on the other hand, the technical difficulty that its drafting would trigger.
