Spain : a new law limits and organizes subcontracting in the building and construction industry

A new law or regulation on the building and construction industry (BCI) is always important news in Spain due to the fact that this industry amounts to around a 10 percent of the gross domestic product. When it comes to labour and employment issues, this industry is a primary focus, not only because in 2005 more than 12% of the total employees were working in it, but also because one-third of the work-related deaths in Spain affected building and construction employees. For Spanish unions, one of the main reasons behind this high level of deadly accidents is subcontracting, a widely extended practice in the industry.
