The CCOO union has started looking to its future. 350 people from both the union machine and the militant wings will come together on 21 June to examine the future of unionism as well as its much needed adaptation to the world or work. In preparation, the central union body has already distributed a weighty self-assessment document entitled ‘rethinking the trade union’. The Spanish press has focused on its suggestion of making union leadership remuneration a function of results, in terms of memberships numbers, however the document, which is meant to serve as a basis for the upcoming discussion is actually is much more comprehensive.

The CCOO document is 117 pages long and includes a large and detailed section on Spain’s trade union history. The second half of the document concentrates on the main issue of ‘rethinking the union so as to place work at the center of society’ and includes a study on the union’s modus operandi and ways in which it can be improved. CCOO affiliates will be invited to contribute to the debate that is commencing within the union and to post their contributions on a dedicated website.
