Spain: stakes of the 9th congress of the Workers’ Commission union (CCOO) to be held in Madrid on December 17-20

Two applicants. José Maria Fidalgo defends his report and the negotiating capacity of the CCOO, which established itself as the country’s main union force, before the UGT, the other large federation. Paradoxically, while the Spanish communist party is about to disappear, CCOO union, born in its wake, keeps rising compared with its rival, close to the socialist party. The reason might be that, for more than 10 years, CCOO chose negotiation rather than confrontation. The union was involved in all the major social agreements signed during the last decade. José Maria Fidalgo embodies this open dialogue. His rival, Ignacio Fernandez Toxo, relies on critical trends within the union to try and win the job. His support mostly comes from local unions in Catalonia, the Basque Country, and Madrid, as well as from the building federation.
