Sweden: reform of sickness leaves in sight

The abuse of sickness leaves and its impact on the under-evaluation of unemployment was an important issue in the election campaign of summer 2006. The new government already announced various measures to fight against abuses, among which the suppression of the employer's obligation to co-finance with the social security the sickness leaves allowances beyond 15 days. A new report, which has been just presented by experts appointed by the previous government, will probably lead to new reforms for people on a sickness leave. Currently, employers are supposed to proceed to an investigation intended to measure the needs for physical or professional readjustment for all the employees who were on a sickness leave during 4 weeks.
