The European Commission clarifies its position on discrimination against smokers at recruitment

The European Commission had to clarify its position on discrimination against smokers in the recruitment process. By being firmly opposed to this form discrimination, the Commission put an end to divergent interpretations which appeared last weeks following a first declaration. (Ref. 06796)

The European Commission clarified, on August 8, its position about discrimination against smokers in the recruiting process, following an Irish case in which a company expressly mentioned in a job advertisement that smokers needed not apply. An European MP, Catherine Stihler, asked the European Commissioner for Employment, Social Affairs, and Equal Opportunities, Vladimir Spidla, if this practice was in conformity with the Community law dealing with discriminations.
