The European Metalworkers’ Federation condemns the closing of GM plant in Azambuja

The European Metalworkers' Federation has "condemned" on July 13, the closing of the General Motors factory of Azambuja (Portugal), which was confirmed at a meeting of the European work's council which took place at the beginning of last week. (Ref. 06728)

The closing was only delayed two months, to 31 December 2006, said the EMF. “This closure of a profitable plant is not a reduction of overcapacity or the restructuring of a crippled company”. The president of the European work’s council (European Employee’s Forum), Franz Klaus (IG Metall) rips the change of GME ’s strategy i.e. the plans to close its plants in Western Europe and to transfer production to Eastern Europe.
