A year after launching a consultation on 'fire and rehire', the much-criticised practice of dismissing an employee only to rehire him or her on a less favourable contract, the UK government has just presented the updated version of its code of good practice, which it plans to apply during the summer. The trade unions are critical of the fact that the system does not impose enough constraints on businesses.
Promised since 2022, the code of good practice on ‘fire and rehire’ – which still has to be approved by Parliament before it can be implemented – “protects workers’ rights whilst respecting business flexibility”, said the government when it presented the updated version on 19 February.
