From today, Monday 1 October, employees of the UK postal service are to see their weekly working hours cut from 39 to 38 hours. This unprecedented measure is part of the so-called Four Pillars of Security and Pay National Agreement, which was agreed in February with the Communication Workers Union (CWU). Under the agreement, working time is to be reduced to 35 hours per week by 2022, a reduction that serves two purposes: firstly to improve the work-life balance of Royal Mail workers and secondly to better address the digital revolution that the group has been grappling with since 2013.
The first stage of this working time reduction plan concerns around 120,000 workers, although not all employees will see their schedules change on 1 October, the CWU warned. Given how difficult it is to implement such a measure, some employees will not be able to enjoy this change until the end of the month, while the working hours of some will not change at all, but they will receive compensation deemed to be worth the equivalent.
