In the space of just a few weeks tech giant Google has fired five of its staff, and not, according to the former employees in question, because of any breaches of internal regulations or any workplace rules, but instead because they were too liberal in expressing their opinions, and in particular as regards company collaboration with the US immigration authorities. The former employees have now taken their cases to the National Labor Relations Board (Federal Agency responsible for enforcing U.S. labor law in relation to collective bargaining and unfair labor practices).
The most recent employee to be shown the door is Ms. Kathryn Spiers – aged 21. However Ms. Spiers wrote some lines of code designed as a pop-up for her colleagues to read. So when her co-workers checked IRI Consultants’ website, anti-union consulting firm recently hire by Google, or review the employees rule book,they would see a pop-up reminding them they do have the legal right to participate in protected concerted activities.
