This new policy, announced during the week of 27 August applies across all its US supplier companies employing at least 50 staff and which carry out ‘substantial work’, by which is understood involving access to the company’s premises. Compensation has to amount to at least two thirds of overall remuneration, subject to a weekly ceiling of $1,000. Microsoft had previously required its contractor companies to provide staff with two weeks paid leave as well as sick leave.
Microsoft has committed to collaborating with its US suppliers to implement the new policy over the next 12 months. “We appreciate that this may ultimately result in increased costs for Microsoft, and we’ll put a process in place for addressing these issues with our suppliers,” declared Microsoft Vice President and General Council Dev Stahlkopf.
