The United Auto Workers (UAW) managed to increase their membership. They completed 2013 with 391,415 members, i.e. 9,000 more than in 2012 and nearly 15,000 more than in 2010. Why this upsurge? Because employment has risen in the auto industry and because the union has extended membership to casino workers, graduate teaching assistants and mentors in universities.
First, American carmakers are doing better. “In 2008, GM, Ford and Chrysler only made 9 million cars a year. We’re now expecting 15 million,” explained Arthur Wheaton, Workplace and Industry Education Specialist for the Institute for Industry Studies at Cornell University. Therefore, carmakers are hiring. Thus, Ford brought the production of its Fusion sedan from Mexico back to Michigan, some trucks are being made in Ohio, and Ford even brought light vehicles back from Europe to Kansas...
