The United Auto Workers (UAW) managed to increase their membership.  They completed 2013 with 391,415 members, i.e. 9,000 more than in 2012 and nearly 15,000 more than in 2010.  Why this upsurge?  Because employment has risen in the auto industry and because the union has extended membership to casino workers, graduate teaching assistants and mentors in universities.

First, American carmakers are doing better. “In 2008, GM, Ford and Chrysler only made 9 million cars a year.
