Negotiators at Disney together with a coalition of 6 trade unions have agreed that over the next four years the minimum hourly wage at the Florida Walt Disney World theme park will rise from $10 to $15. The minimum hourly wage rate in the State of Florida is currently $8.25. These negotiations started almost a year ago but took on a different complexion when Walt Disney’s reputation was called into question following staff accounts of extreme hardship in being able to live decently and find decent accommodation.
Walt Disney came round in the end. Management at the Walt Disney World theme park in Florida came to an agreement with a negotiating group of 6 trade unions to progressively raise the minimum hourly wage to $15 by 2021. The 38,000 ‘cast members’ concerned will vote on this four year contract the 05 and 06 September and the Service Trades Council Union (STCU), which is representing the six-union coalition, is expecting their overwhelming approval.
