Following intense negotiations (24 and 25 March) Washington’s Democrat and Republican Senators eventually came to agreement over a $2 trillion economic stimulus package, in what is the biggest Federal aid package ever seen and which easily outstrips the $800 billion allocated during the 2008 financial crisis. The package includes direct payments to families and more generous unemployment compensation amounts.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell formally announced the agreement on the Senate floor, describing it as “a wartime level of investment for our nation,” while Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (Democrat – New York) declared, “This is not a moment of celebration but one of necessity,” and he continued, “I say to all Americans that strong fast help is on the way.” The bill now has to go to the House of Representatives for passage and then onto the President for signature.
