On September 29, generative AI specialist OpenAI (Q1 2025 revenue: $4.3 billion, up 16% year-on-year, net loss of $2.5 billion) rolled out a native e-commerce feature on its ChatGPT LLM in the United States. With the Instant Checkout AI agent, developed in collaboration with fintech Stripe, the 105,000 US users (15% of the global active user base) of the various versions of ChatGPT will be able to purchase and complete payment without leaving the interface. The feature is available on Etsy for approximately one million merchants on the platform using Shopify, such as Glossier, SKIMS, Spanx, and Vuori. For now, only one item can be purchased per transaction, but multi-item and multi-merchant shopping carts are expected to follow soon. Merchants pay a commission on completed purchases. When asked by mind Retail, OpenAI did not disclose the amount.

To remember: OpenAI invites merchants who do not use Shopify to build their payment integration using its Agentic Commerce protocol, which it makes available. Merchants can then apply to sell on the platform.
