Metro supermarkets (sales of US$9.5 billion last year) have made a takeover offer of US$3.6 billion for the Jean Coutu drugstore chain, whose sales reached US$2.2 billion last year. If approved by the competition authority, this would combine Metro leading banners and high value property of Jean Coutu. The consolidated giant would make cumulative sales of about US$12.5 billion a year with 1,300 active stores, including 677 drugstores.
