According to the National Confederation of Commerce, which monitors 700,000 stores in Latin America’s largest economy, Brazilian retailers closed 166,900 stores between January 2015 and June 2016. During H1 2016, store closures reached a total of 67,900 shops, while 99,000 stores shut down for the whole of 2015. Such figures show how rising inflation, soaring unemployment and the current squeeze on credit have eroded customer spending power.
