After a wave of closure in the United States, the Gap Group plans to open 40 new stores in 2017, net of terminations and redevelopment. These include primarily Old Navy fashion stores, which sell to families, and Athleta, a sportswear brand whose sales are thriving in North America. This rate of expansion remains moderate, however, considering the 113 store closures during the quarter to January 2017.
